A Canopy Designed to Glow

At the entrance of K Mall in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, the arrival experience begins overhead.

Designed as a contemporary architectural canopy, the installation transforms the mall entrance into a distinctive visual landmark through parametric perforation, light, and geometry.

The project uses the Perforation – Gradient system by Axes in Excess to create an aluminium ceiling where the perforation pattern gradually changes across the surface. Rather than following a uniform grid, the pattern creates a controlled gradient effect, allowing areas of the ceiling to transition from denser perforation to more open formations.

A Gradient Written in Metal

The idea is simple, but the effect is powerful.

Thousands of precisely positioned perforations form a continuous visual field across the canopy. The changing density creates movement within an otherwise static ceiling, giving the entrance a sense of depth and flow.

The result is a parametric perforated canopy that feels lighter, more intricate, and distinctly contemporary.

Light Becomes Part of the Architecture

The real transformation happens after sunset.

The perforated aluminium ceiling is integrated with acrylic sheets and strip lighting, allowing light to pass through the perforation pattern. During the day, the canopy reads as a geometric metal surface. At night, it becomes a luminous architectural layer.

The perforations act almost like pixels of light.

As the illumination spreads across the gradient pattern, the ceiling develops a soft, immersive glow that changes the character of the entire entrance.

Axes in Excess' Perforation system is designed to accommodate integrated backlighting, making the relationship between perforation and illumination an important part of the architectural expression.

From Entrance Canopy to Experience

At a shopping destination, the entrance is more than a point of access.

It establishes the first impression.

Here, the canopy creates that impression through a combination of parametric design, CNC perforation, aluminium fabrication, and architectural lighting. The gradient pattern provides the visual identity, while the backlighting gives the structure a second life after dark.

In daylight, it is precise.

At night, it glows.

And between the two, the architecture continues to change with the atmosphere around it.

With a carefully controlled gradient pattern and integrated illumination, a simple ceiling surface becomes an architectural feature—one that guides visitors toward the entrance while creating a memorable identity for the mall.
